Kayu Managing Director, Sirajudin Y. Mohd Maidin
Kayu Nasi Kandar was the first to set up a large, modernised, ultra-bright nasi kandar outlet with outdoor dining in Bukit Jambul, Penang, in 2000 by their managing director Sirajudin Y. Mohd Maidin. The decision of setting up Kayu Nasi Kandar was driven by his idea which is to change the image of nasi kandar outlets.

During the early years, Sirajudin father, Mohamed Mydin Yusof was started his nasi kandar business on Penang island in the 1950s at a roadside stall in Macalister Road. They started the Kayu Nasi Kandar restaurant only in 1974 after the whole family moved to Petaling Jaya

Currently Kayu Nasi Kandar has been expended to more than 11 outlets in Klang Valley, Penang Bukit Jambu and others within Malaysia.

Kayu Nasi Kandar serve a lot of different variety of food, and among these, their nasi kandar is probably the most popular one. Nasi Kandar is a popular northern Malaysian dish, which originates from Penang. It is a meal of steamed rice which can be plain or mildly flavored, and served with a variety of curries and side dishes.

The word Nasi Kandar, came about from a time when nasi (rice) hawkers or vendors would kandar (balance) a pole on the shoulder with two huge containers of rice meals. The name has remained and today the word Nasi Kandar is seen on most Tamil Muslim or Malaysian Mamak restaurants and Indian-Muslim stalls offering rice meals.
