Nam Chau (南洲白咖啡) in Old Town, Ipoh, is rapidly transforming itself into a household name, when it comes to good old curry mee in Ipoh. The popularity of their curry noodles is on par with other famous names, such as Xin Quan Fang Restaurant (新泉芳咖哩面茶餐室) and Sun Seng Fatt Restaurant (怡保新成发), both located in Ipoh as well. Recently, they opened another branch in Bandar Baru Menglembu and First Garden, a sign of its ever-growing patronage and business.
Of course, Ipoh Old Town White Coffee has been, and is still popular for its brand of white coffee, an aromatic beverage of coffee beans roasted in margarine, to bring out the fragrant flavour of the beans, as well as imparting a smoky, buttery aroma. Coffee aficionados will attest to the taste the moment a sip is taken.
Nam Chau (南洲白咖啡) serves their own signature white coffee as well, and in this reviewer's opinions, is one of the best white coffee in the market. The beverages served in coffee shops in Ipoh command a following of their own, and everyone has his/her preference. At Nam Chau (南洲白咖啡), their coffee, Cham(掺,combination of milk tea and coffee), and the milk tea are safe best. Nothing beats a warm cup of coffee to perk up our day.
If a lighter breakfast is desired, rest assured they have a variety of toasts to complement customer desires. Particularly worth noting is the Dan Chi, or Half-boiled Eggs on Toast. Two runny eggs atop 2 slices of well-toasted bread with a thin layer of margarine, the toasts are served with soy sauce and pepper, to enhance the overall experience. Other than the egg toasts, Nam Chau (南洲白咖啡) serves kaya & butter toasts, ham toasts and tuna toasts to cater to customer carbo cravings.
But indeed, the main attraction at Nam Chau (南洲白咖啡) has to be the one dish that keeps warrant for attention, and subsequent visits. The dry curry noodles. With a comparable cheap price, customers are getting prawns, chicken shreds, and char siew (叉烧) to complement customer's choice of noodles, be it yellow noodles, rice noodles, or vermicelli. Their brand of thick, luscious, spicy and aromatic curry paste has no comparison as yet, and deserving of an accolade for possibly the best dry curry in Ipoh. Customer can choose to increase/decrease the spiciness, or add ingredients such as cockles or roasted pork to your plate of noodles, at extra charges.
But if customer not fond of curry noodles, they can order their Chicken Noodle Soup, or Kai Si Hor Fan (鸡丝河粉), another Ipoh's specialty. Smooth, flat rice noodles (kuey tiao) cooked in the clear broth that is brimming with flavour. Lots of chicken strips and prawns are added into the bowl of noodles, garnished with spring onions.
Another interesting bowl of noodles they serve is the aptly-named "Tar Lan Wun" (打烂碗), or literally-translated to Broken Bowl. Glass noodles is served with fish balls in a bowl of flavorful soup, garnished with spring onions and red chillies, with a side plate of Chinese crullers yew char kueh. A light meal, best to calm the nerve before a hectic day.
