Carnation Bak Kut Teh (康乃馨肉骨茶) is located at Gurney Drive, the popular seafront promenade in the heart of Georgetown, Penang Island. The Bak Kut Teh here is very famous and has been invited by famous food connoisseurs from Taiwan and Hong Kong. For example Chua Lam (蔡澜) and Chen Hong (陈鸿).
The stallholder has worked in a Chinese medicine shop in his young days and has perfected the art of adding Chinese herbs to enhance the taste in his Hakka-style Bak Kut Teh. Using only the best ingredients, he makes 1kg of soup from 1kg of pork ribs. Anyway there are some rumors saying that the receipt of Carnation Bak Kut Teh (康乃馨肉骨茶) is actually bought from Good Master Bak Kut Teh (食王肉骨茶). The story is Good Master was originate from Kuantan and it was very famous. Then Carnation owner from Penang paid up thousands and went to Kuatan to learn from Good Master. So, after the Carnation's owner came back and became famous, the Good Master turned up in Penang and open another outlet too. Anyway this is just a unproven story.
Back to Carnation Bak Kut Teh (康乃馨肉骨茶), the Hakka-style Bak Kut Teh here is known for its fresh original taste, as well as tender and succulent pork ribs. It's also recommended to try this wonderful signature dish around 9am because the soup base is boiled to perfection during this period and it tastes heavenly. The pork ribs are tender and delicious without the oily aftertaste.
Other than Bak Kut Teh, this restaurant also serves many different kinds of Zhu Cha (煮炒). For example seafood, fried vegetable, curry, beacurd and many others. Although the price is slightly higher probably due to it is located in tourist hot spot, but it is still worth to try due to the seaside dining environment and tasty food.
