Goh Huat Seng Restaurant(吴发成菜馆) is one of the best Teowchew(潮洲) style restaurant in Penang. Many locals and also visitors from abroad and outstation visit this place. Especially on weekends, the place is usually packed. Late customers usually have to stand and wait in front of the shop.

Background

This restaurant started the business since around 1960, and now it still enjoys popularity as the Goh brothers inherited the business and authentic Teochew recipe from their father. What's special about their steamboat is that the steamboat is heated by charcoal, something which is quite rare in this day and age where everything is run by electric. The trio also innovate new Teowchew dishes to add to the menu.

Dining environment

Goh Huat Seng Restaurant is a coffee shop encased in a white washed building on two shop lots. This classic Chinese restaurant personifies everything associated with downtown Chinese restaurants.

Although a lot of customers are having steamboat inside this restaurant, the fully air-conditioned dining environment let diners feel more comfortable.

Service

The restaurant does not provide any menu for the customer. For customer who prefer steamboat package, the basic steamboat package is roughly RM20 per person. For diner who prefer Teowchew style ala carte, they can either ask for recommendation from restaurant staff or go with what he can see on the table next to him.

The waiting times to been served will be a bit longer since this is a traditional steamboat using charcoal. Need more times for the soup to be ready.

Food

Due to the traditions passed down through generations, charcoal steamboat is still used for the soup stock brewed from pork bones in this restaurant. This is because most people believe that soup that boiled slowly with charcoal will taste much better. Although their soup base is always the clear chicken soup, they manage to boil it to a flavorful taste.

The steamboat pot is also made with metal, which is much more efficient in boiling soup. The steamboat comes with a variety of dishes, freshly cut and served. For those who may be new to this restaurant, they can choose to take the readily available packaged steamboat meals priced from RM20 per person. Furthermore, they can top up with any extra dishes of their choice. Anyway, the soup based itself already contains some fresh ingredient, for example chicken pieces, fried fish maw and cabbage.

During the cooking process, the restaurant even provide a mini fan (cute little green fan) that run on batteries to speed up the cooking time. With the fresh ingredients simmering in the clear soup, it ends up very sweet and delicious.

Besides the steamboat, Goh Huat Seng Restaurant also serves delicious Teochew dishes. One can have a meal with dishes and their signature delicacies like the Lor Arp(braised duck), Chim Joe(crab roll), Heh Joe(prawn roll) and Oh Chien Nui(oyster omelette).
