Penang:I Mum Mum Restaurant
From Malaysia - Wiki Street Food
I Mum Mum Restaurant(板面专卖店) started their business in Penang since April 2009. The restaurant is specialize in providing various version of Pan Mee and it is now gradually gaining recognition with their good food. The restaurant is located in PDC flat, which is just beside Jelutong Express Way and there is a very obvious signboard beside the main road.
Background
The restaurant runs by a young couple, Mr Choo(朱炳綸) and Ms Carmen(吳嘉穗), and they are quite experience in food and beverage field. Back to 2004, Mr Choo was a chef in London. Then in around 2007, they had decided to start up their first simple Pan Mee stall in Malaysia, which sells only one kind of flavor. In around 2008, they had started their first Pan Mee specialist restaurant in Kuala Lumpur with a friend. Eventually in 2009, this young couple had decided to start up their own Pan Mee specialist restaurant in their hometown, Penang.
Food
Compare to many other Pan Mee restaurants/stalls within Penang, I Mum Mum Restaurant probably is the one which is most creative in adding value to the traditional Pan Mee. The restaurant provides 3 types of Pan Mee shapes, which are thin, flat and the not so common hand nip Pan Mee. While talking about the method of cooking, they have ordinary dry or soup based Pan Mee. Other than these, they also have new inventions like Spicy Pan Mee, Minced Pork Pan Mee and Crispy Pork Pan Mee.
For the soup based Pan Mee, it tastes very good. The soup which cooked for more than 10 hours is not too oily with the sweetness coming from the fragrantly fried anchovies, and the noodles are cooked just right. The dry Pan Mee is marvelous with great texture and the springy Pan Mee blended well with all the other ingredients, dark soy sauce and sesame oil. While the rest of Pan Mee flavors are basically dry Pan Mee with different toppings. Quite a lot of customers love these new flavors too, especially the Crispy Pork Pan Mee.
Other than that, I Mum Mum Restaurant also provides some simple side dishes. For example dumpling, fish ball and meat ball. The dumpling taste not bad and is one of the recommended dishes. But the other side dishes are quite common and not impressive.
Environment and Service
Although I Mum Mum Restaurant is not an air-conditioned restaurant, the dining area at the corridor is quite comfort too. Anyway the temperature of dining area inside the restaurant is much higher, due to their stove is just located next to it.
Service wise, the owner Ms Carmen is very friendly and loves to smile. From the food and service of this young couple and their family members, it is quite obvious that they are very sincere to the customer and passionate to the business. The nice logo design, the light green interior painting, the effort in inventing new menu, the friendly service are good indicators for a restaurant to become successful in the future.
