Penang:Padang Brown Yong Dao Fu

Although it is very hard to conclude which Yong Dao Fu stall is the best in Penang, it is quite obvious that Yong Dao Fu stall at Padang Brown food court of Georgetown is very famous. Every afternoon, there will always have a crowd of customers in hunger surrounding this stall.

Location

The food court is strategically located beside a huge green field, Padang Brown, which located at the corner of Perak Road and Anson Road. The Yong Dao Fu stall is the last stall of the food court if counting from their car park.

Although it is an open air hawker center, the shaded trees are able to cool down the atmosphere and sometimes windy.

Background

Padang Brown, which literally in Malay language is Brown Field. It is a 12 acre playing field in George Town, donated by David Brown of Glugor Estate, a pioneer resident and planter in Strait Settlement Penang. The hawker center which is next to this field was opened at 26th April of 1966 until now.

At the center of this hawker center, there is a David Brown Memorial. The memorial was erected by the public,both locals and European, in memory of David Brown. The memorial was once stood at the centre of the field, but later relocated to the centre of the hawker complex.

Food

Yong Tao Foo which literally means stuffed bean curd is a very popular street food among Chinese. And Padang Brown Yong Dau Fu stall always has its own crowd. The secret probably lies in the delicious broth soup which is simmered with pork for a long time. Serving in a clear broth containing a variety of stuffed and add-on food items, the Yong Dau Fu here can be eaten by itself alone or together with noodles or rice.

Among the popular vegetables being stuffed are cabbage, bitter gourds and chillies. Other than that, one of the specialty of this Yong Dao Fu stall is probably their varieties of pork innards ingredients. For example pork skin, stomach, lung, intestine.

Customer is require to pick their preferable Yong Dao Fu ingredient from the stall. Then, inform the stall operator where roughly they are seating and stall owner will take care of the rest. The selection of customer's choices will then be cut into bite-size pieces and boil briefly in the serving broth. Then, they may choose to be taken with rice noodles, yellow noodles or glass noodles.

Although the foods here is simple and some of the people might not feel comfort to eat pork innards, this stall has been famous since 1960s. It has also become part of the memories of many Penang locals, which is the place that they have their Yong Dao Fu meal since young.
