Penang:Tai Tong Restaurant
From Malaysia - Wiki Street Food
Tai Tong Restaurant(大东酒楼) is an old style restaurant that has been operating for many decades. The restaurant is located at the historic and central part of Penang Georgetown and nestles by some of the old buildings at the end of Cintra Street.
While stepping in Tai Tong Restaurant, similar to those old days, customer will be greeted with the sight of families tucking into the Dim Sum, few old men chatting happily and ladies pushing carts up and down the aisle, stopping at each table offering various Dim Sum. Although these ladies are brash and loud, they are extremely friendly and patience. Usually they will tell the customer straight away that they have ordered too much food or they've missed some signature dishes.
Most of the people visit this restaurant for their Dim Sum, and the restaurant serves Dim Sum only at breakfast and dinner. They provide seafood Zhu Cha during lunch time. While talking about the Dim Sum here, quite a lot of people believe that it is one of the best within Penang, although some might have a different opinion. Anyway the fact is this restaurant is always crowded with people.
Other than ordinary Dim Sum, there are a few signature Zhu Cha dishes at Tai Tong Restaurant. One of them is the crispy noodles(生面), which is the deep fried noodle added seafood and fresh vegetable paste. The noodle will absorb the paste and become soften and delicious. The other highly recommended dish here is the fried oyster omelet, which is different from most Penang restaurants due to they are using just pure oyster and eggs, without the yam flour.
Tai Tong Restaurant accepts phone orders too. This is especially useful when customer working late and prefer to take away their order faster. Overall, if customer enjoy rustic and hearty Dim Sum in a casual, unpretentious old style setting, they should try to visit Tai Tong Restaurant(大东酒楼).
