Penang:Zim Sum (点心之家)
From Malaysia - Wiki Street Food
While talking about Dim Sum within Ipoh, Perak, the first restaurant that comes into most people mind definitely is the invincible Foh San (富山香港点心). Where else in Penang, people stay within Bayan Lepas area probably would recommend Maxim Dim Sum Restaurant (美食之家茶餐楼). But in Penang George Town area, Zim Sum Restaurant (点心之家) is definitely one of the recommendation by local people. This restaurant is also one of the business that runs by the same owner of Town Steamboat Restaurant (火锅之家) and Dim Sum Food Restaurant (点心小厨) nearby.
Zim Sum Restaurant (点心之家) is located along Anson Road, just slightly opposite KDU college. It is not east to find a parking slot here, due to there are limited car park slots in front. Many customer prefer to take risk and park at the road side for free. Anyway they can also pay around RM3 per entry to park safely at Penang Chinese Ladies's Chin Woo Association. The tussle on parking slot also reflected on number of unoccupied table within this restaurant and it is even more obvious during weekend.
One difference between Dim Sum restaurant in Ipoh and Penang is normally in Ipoh Dim Sum outlets, there would have carts being pushed around from tables to tables and customer play a more passive role to pick whatever comes approach. But in Penang, customer are ask to play an active role to pick for whatever they like at the food counter, where all the choices and varieties are placed. Same case for Zim Sum Restaurant (点心之家) as well. Anyway something slightly different in this restaurant is they don't even have a food note to record whatever customer have taken. Their practice is bill will be counted based on how many plates of food on the customer's table.
Zim Sum Restaurant (点心之家) has wide variety of Dim Sum dishes for example egg tart with puffy crusts (蛋挞), Charn Bao (餐包), Zhu Chang Fen (猪肠粉), Yong Tao Fu (釀豆腐) and many other different kinds of steamed or deep fried Dim Sum. All these Dim Sum are made and cook on the fly, similar to a manufacturing line that fresh food keeps on coming out from the kitchen. Besides, there is another counter which serves Chu Cha style of food, for example Wan Tan Mee (云吞面), porridge, fried silver noodle, and others.
The overall food quality here is about average, same goes to the price and service too. But after all, these might not be very important sometimes when the customer just want to have a place to have Dim Sum with friends or family, and the process of having the food is more enjoyable.
